What is Counselling

Counselling is a type of talking therapy, that enables a person to talk about and reflect upon their feelings, needs and problems, all within a safe, structured, and confidential environment. The fundamental basis of any effective counselling is to provide clients with a professional therapeutic relationship based on non-judgemental respect and offering empathic understanding. Counsellors may employ a number of additional ways, to provide their clients with tools and strategies, to assist with healing and self-development.

This special environment is a chance for the client to be listened to and for all their worries and concerns to be taken seriously, whilst continuously helping to support the client to reach their own decisions and conclusions, all from within a close and collaborative therapeutic relationship.

By reflecting, challenging, identifying, and discussing any concerns, counselling can help with positive events such as choosing a new direction in life or perhaps reaching your full potential. It can also offer alternative ways to view things in life from another perspective. There may also be some things from a person’s past, that need to be understood, or things within a person’s present-day life, that are just proving too challenging. It can help us deal with all kinds of adversities from Anxiety and Stress, to Personal relationships, or perhaps coping with any Bereavement and Loss, to name but just a few. There really is a long list of issues that Counselling services may be able to help with, and by working closely together, the counsellor will help to support the client through their own individual process.

It is vital in counselling that we acknowledge ‘we are all different people’, all with completely different perceptions and outlooks on life. This makes every single client an important individual within their own right, consequently tailoring all counselling approaches to the individual’s personal needs. Therefore, the client will always remain the most important and valued factor within the therapeutic relationship.

The whole process will always be carried out at a pace that suits the particular individual, whilst any proposed therapy plans will be collaboratively agreed between the client and therapist and will always remain within the client’s total control. These plans will also remain flexible, to adapt to any developments and changes that occur during any subsequent sessions.
